The Art of Listening: Why Leaders Who Listen Inspire Trust

Let me coach you for a moment.
When was the last time someone truly listened to you?
Not to reply... Not to fix... Not to interrupt...
Just listened.
How did that feel?
Seen... Valued... Respected...
Now here’s the shift: If that’s how it felt for you… Imagine what it does for your team.
Listening Is Leadership
Many leaders believe their power comes from speaking clearly and decisively.
But trust isn’t built when you talk. It’s built when others feel heard.
In coaching, we talk about three levels of listening:
Listening to respond – waiting for your turn.
Listening to understand – fully focused on the other person.
Listening beyond words – noticing tone, hesitation, emotion.
The deeper you listen, the safer people feel. And when people feel safe, they contribute more openly and honestly.
A Small Leadership Experiment
In your next meeting:
Speak less.
Ask one more question.
Pause before responding.
Reflect back what you heard.
That’s it.
Simple shifts. Powerful results.
Leadership isn’t about having all the answers.
It’s about creating space where others feel confident enough to share theirs.
So I’ll leave you with this:
Who needs to feel heard by you this week?
Start there.
With intention,Nene 💛
