Owning Your Power: Building Confidence from the Inside Out

By Nene Obibi-Mordi
Confidence is something many people search for.
They look for it in promotions.
In qualifications.In praise from others.
In external success.
But real confidence is built differently.
It grows from the inside out.
And one of the biggest lessons I have learned through nursing, leadership, coaching, and personal growth is this:
Confidence is not about becoming louder. It is about becoming more grounded in who you are.
Many capable people still doubt themselves
One thing that surprises people is how many high-achieving professionals quietly struggle with confidence.
Nurses who lead teams but question themselves.
Professionals who carry huge responsibilities but still feel “not good enough.”
People who support everyone else while ignoring their own strengths.
Confidence struggles are often hidden behind competence.
From the outside, people may appear strong and capable. But internally, many are battling self-doubt, comparison, fear of failure, or the pressure to constantly prove themselves.
This is why confidence is not only a professional issue.
It is a personal one too.
Confidence is built through action, not perfection
Many people wait to feel confident before they take action.
But confidence rarely works that way.
Confidence usually grows after you:
speak up despite fear
try something new
survive a difficult season
make decisions independently
reflect on how far you have already come
Every small step builds evidence.
Evidence that you are capable.
Evidence that you can adapt.
Evidence that you can grow.
Confidence is often built quietly through repeated experiences, not dramatic moments.
Stop shrinking yourself
Sometimes people lose confidence because they spend years shrinking themselves to fit into spaces that were never designed for them.
They minimise their ideas.
Avoid visibility.
Silence their voice.
Apologise for their ambition.
Over time, this affects how people see themselves.
But owning your power means recognising that your voice, perspective, and experiences matter.
Especially in leadership.
The healthcare sector, workplaces, communities, and families all need leaders who are emotionally intelligent, reflective, compassionate, and courageous.
Not copies of someone else.
You.
Reflection helps rebuild confidence
One of the most powerful confidence-building tools is reflection.
When people pause and reflect honestly, they often realise they have already overcome far more than they give themselves credit for.
The difficult shift they survived.
The patient they supported through fear. The project they led.
The family they cared for during crisis.
These moments matter.
Reflection helps people reconnect with their resilience, growth, and capability.
This is why reflective practice is so powerful in both coaching and leadership development.
It reminds people of their own strength.
Confidence and creativity are connected
Confidence grows when people allow themselves to think, create, and express themselves freely.
This is why creativity matters more than many professionals realise.
Creativity helps people:
communicate differently
solve problems confidently
reconnect with joy
trust their instincts
lead authentically
When people stop trying to perform perfection and start expressing themselves honestly, confidence begins to grow naturally.
You do not need to become someone else
A lot of personal development advice focuses on changing yourself completely.
But often, growth is less about becoming someone new and more about returning to yourself.
The version of you that:
trusted your voice
believed your ideas mattered
felt capable before fear and pressure took over
Owning your power is not arrogance.
It is self-awareness.
It is recognising your value without needing constant validation from others.
Build confidence from the inside out
External achievements can feel rewarding, but lasting confidence is built internally.
It comes from:
self-awareness
reflection
growth
courage
authenticity
resilience
And most importantly, it comes from learning to speak to yourself with the same compassion you give to everyone else.
A question to reflect on
What would change in your life or leadership if you fully believed you were already capable of more than you think?
Sit with that question honestly.
Because sometimes the biggest shift in confidence happens the moment people stop waiting for permission to own their power.
